JA1YZK, Spring 1976

When I moved to Japan in 1975 it was not possible for a foreigner to obtain a callsign.  You could get permission to operate from a club station.  Thanks to the help of the Tokyo International Amateur Radio Association (TIARA) and JA1KSO, I was able to "borrow" the club call JA1YZK. Below is a picture of the station in my house. Outside was a multi-band vertical and a small 3-element tribander.

This was at the height of the amateur radio explosion in Japan. It was great to get on the air every day after school and talk to other Japanese teenagers. I would practice Japanese and they would practice English. I actually got to the point where I could make a 10 minute scripted conversation in Japanese before I would have to admit that I didn't know any more sentences and had to end the QSO.
